Winds have battered the Ohio Valley and many portions of the US over the last couple of days. This threat continues into today, and will potentially peak over today and tomorrow. Today's threat brings an elevated risk of potential hurricane-force winds, QLCS tornadoes, and if supercells are allowed to form out ahead of it, tornadoes of EF-2+ or greater intensity.

Reporting from Bloomington, Indiana, the wind here has been very strong. We've seen gusts today of over 55mph+. The greenhouse here on the BT Weather property had its windows blown out (non-destructively), and is now being dissassembled for the approaching storm. Already reporting wind damage here, and today's storms haven't even started. Today, BT Weather HQ is under an Enhanced Risk for severe weather.

Power outages are expected across much of today's path. Please refer to https://www.weather.gov/mqt/carbontips for information on running portable generators.

If we lose power here at BT Weather, we will sadly have to stop our coverage for the day, unless it comes back quickly (less than 30 minutes.) If everything goes as planned, we will be live on BreakyTime on Twitch at 4PM ET. Be safe today. Turn around, don't drown, and don't be scared, be prepared.

Due to a particularly dangerous setup for a severe weather outbreak on Sunday, March 15, 2026, BT Weather will be live with emergency coverage starting at 4PM ET on BreakyTime. While the extent of the threat is at this moment uncertain, the models are showing increasing instability in the atmosphere. A major threat spanning from the Ark-LA-Tex region to southern Indiana is expected to bring with it major winds, damaging hail, and the potential for strong tornadoes. BT Weather has issued its second ever Level 5 [PDS] rating, not even one week after issuing its first on Tuesday, March 10, during the deadly outbreak which killed 2 in Lake Village, Indiana.

Don't miss the special coverage stream starting at 4PM ET. I will be preparing the shelter in the morning for what could be hurricane-force winds. There is a high likelihood that we lose power tomorrow, I believe. If power is lost, I will report on the BreakyTime Discord

We now have an original, exclusive Bloomington, Indiana skycam! We will be utilizing it tomorrow during the severe weather outbreak. We can get ground truth in a much safer way now!

The National Weather Service has issued an Enhanced Risk for severe weather for the end of the weekend, Sunday, March 15, 2026, and Monday, March 16, 2026. The National Weather Service believes these storms are capable of producing damaging winds and some potential tornadoes.

While BT Weather will not be covering the Sunday outbreak, we will be covering the Monday outbreak. BT Weather does not operate on Sundays. Instead, I will be posting the link to Ryan Hall's coverage stream on Sunday.

We will be live covering the Monday outbreak, however, so don't miss it! We will be doing the usual Breaking Weather Coverage stream we always do! Stay safe out there, all!

Severe weather never stops, even when its not severe weather season. The end of the first wave brings us some relief, but there are reports that the next organized storm risk is Thursday, March 19. It is very early, so models could be wrong, but what if Thursday is the day?

BT Weather: Severe Weather Coverage will come back whenever there is a severe weather risk in which a SISR of more than 2/5 has been issued. That means any time wind gusts of more than 50MPH or a potential for tornadoes has been registered, BT Weather will be activated in full to cover it, even when you don't actually see it happening. I am always watching for new models, and as soon as I believe that a stream will be needed with more than 50% certainty, I will start talking about scheduling a Severe Weather Coverage stream. It must be done this way because BT Weather is 1 person, Alex Layne, and I cannot cover every instance of storms, but when they threaten communities, I will be working my hardest to update those in the way of the storm.

The nearest date that organized severe weather could come back as a recurring daily issue is Thursday, March 19, though things can change. I will post updates if things change, or when I have confirmed the coverage date(s). Thank you for coming along with me while trying to roll out this major project!

BT Weather's Severe Weather Outbreak Coverage is now on standby, waiting for the next wave of atmospheric instability. BT Weather's coverage will slightly diminish until needed again. BT Weather: Weather Hour will still continue. Next week, BT Weather: Weather Hour becomes a twice-weekly segment: Monday and Friday at 7PM ET on BreakyTime.

Wave #1 for 2026 was an intense testing regime for the new BT Weather. It showed where I was doing things right, and also doing things very wrong. The feedback from the community on what people liked and didn't like made a world of difference, and by the end of the first wave, we actually put together what I think is an incredible Alpha version of what we're attempting to put together. This project will take awhile to streamline.

BT Weather has become a major portion of the BreakyTime channel. BT Weather may end up becoming Alex's primary beat after covering politics on Twitch for just about 2 years. While The Newsfeed still continues, BT Weather may now become "Alex Layne's Current Event Speciality."

Alex puts out a final call to the world of Twitch.TV:
"We need people to start covering the weather on Twitch. We have incredible potential to bring a much needed service to people. Experts, hobbyists, and people who are simply interested in weather should get involved.

To my fellow leftists: Just imagine what a de-centralized radical weather collective could accomplish. If you apply things like community organizing and contextual praxis to things like storm spotting and disaster response, I believe that gives you a potent tool in your toolbelt. Severe weather affects everyone, and it ultimately disproportionately impacts marginalized and poor communities who cannot afford to rebuild."

What is potentially the final outbreak of this sequence of damaging severe storms may be bringing some severe weather to the East coast today. Philadelphia is in the severe threat as well as the Woodbury area of New Jersey, to Houston/Galveston, Texas. Today's threat is damaging winds, large hail, and a few potential tornadoes. Around 1,500 J/kg of CAPE is available for these storms to burn.

Today's threat is not as extreme as Tuesday's threat was. WFLI-18 has reported that 2 people were killed in Lake Village, Indiana during last night's historic severe weather outbreak. The National Weather Service is investigating Kankakee, Newton, and Jasper Counties in the coming days, Survey crews will do damage investigations.

BT Weather will be live today covering the March 11, 2026 outbreak HERE.

The opening of the 2026 severe weather season has been one of the most active starts to a season in recent memory. The Tuesday outbreak broke many hail records and put down a monsterous wedge tornado in northern Illinois/Indiana, bringing a path of destruction which spanned from the city of Kankakee, Illinois, to Indian Hills, Indiana. The tornado lifted and lowered around a total of four times, and travelled around a total distance of 68 miles.

Hail broke a state-wide size record in Illinois, with monster hail up to 5". The hailstorm which was produced will be studied for a long time. It broke many records, and a massive amount of spotters were in the area to take ground truth and document the situation, giving us a ton of data to comb through and analyze in the coming days, weeks, months, and even years and decades.

The severe weather threat is almost over, but it still has another day. Today, a large amount of states will be facing a Slight Risk of severe weather. States listed: Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas. Today's threat includes damaging winds, large hail, and maybe a few isolated tornadoes. Though the threat today will not be as intense as yesterday's outbreak, we still need to take it very seriously. Once today is over with, we can finally start to relax again and not worry about weather for a bit, potentially.

You can watch our Wednesday coverage stream HERE at 3PM ET. Don't be scared, be prepared!
